Travel beyond the grand Georgian façade of Bath’s historic centre, with a journey through American history, beginning with its early settlers, right through to the twentieth century. The American Museum offers a notable collection of folklore and decorative arts, exploring the diversity of American traditions. It is known to be the only museum of such memorabilia outside the United States and was created with the premise of bringing American history and cultures to the people of Britain and Greater Europe.

Take time to enjoy the unique collection of more than 250 artefacts, ranging from textiles and patterns to folk art, with infamous faces present in some places. The Central Hall is home to a fine portrait of George Washington, first President of the United States and also the inspiration behind the landscaped garden. You may also want to take in the Exhibition Gallery, before heading out to the terrace to enjoy a views over the Limpley Stoke Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The garden was specifically designed to suit the steep terrain, with native American bedding plants offsetting the natural amphitheatre, ideal for hosting events. Keep an eye out for six sculptures of key figures through American history, beyond the luscious lawn, ideal for exhausting little ones.

The site was chosen by co-founders John Judkyn and Dallas Pratt, as they believed the landscape surrounding Claverton Manor should become an important as part of visitor experience and proves a notable part of the Museum’s education programme also. Since opening in 1961, the land surrounding the house has been developed and includes a replica of George Washington’s garden at Mount Vernon, complete with trail and arboretum.

The American Museum is openly welcome to families, Family Explorer backpacks, craft events, plus the chance to dress up in traditional costume. Single-width pushchairs can be catered throughout, with baby-changing facilities and breast-feeding welcomed. After all that exploring, you may be impartial to a cup of tea or a bite to eat from The Orangery Cafe To enjoy the fully immersive experience, it is recommended to allow three hours for your visit, but is of course possible in less.
