Our next choice in our Pubs by the River series is the gorgeous Inn at Freshford. This is a must-visit village for its beautiful stone architecture and its history as a popular film and TV spot.

The pub has a river view overlooking a green area and the winding river Avon. Treat yourself to a view over the valley from the comfort of the front room or sit outside on a sunny afternoon and take in the beauty of the local countryside. Freshford is only a few minutes’ drive from Bath (there’s also a sporadic train service) and can be reached by car or bicycle.

Inside are maintained log fires, characterful wooden beams and brick work with a bar full of real ales. The Inn at Freshford is a favourite for locals and specialises in high quality, locally-sourced food, serving yummy dishes without being pretentious about it.

You can book a table and see what all the fuss is about by ringing them on 01225722250.

Address: The Hill, Freshford, Bath BA2 7WG
